Market Overview:
Oman's location on the Arabian Peninsula, close to the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman and Persian Gulf, connects Oman to some of the most important energy corridors in the world, strengthening Oman's position in the global energy supply chain. Oman also plans to take advantage of this strategic location to build a world-class refining and oil storage facility near Duqm, outside the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil shipping hub.
Like most Middle Eastern countries, Oman's economy is highly dependent on its oil and gas industry. According to the Central Bank of Oman, revenue from Oman's oil and gas sector accounted for 84% of total government revenue and 47% of Oman's gross domestic product in 2014.
Oman is the largest non-OPEC oil and gas producer in the Middle East, with proven oil reserves of about 5.3 billion barrels, ranking 22nd in the world. Compared with other oil-producing countries in the Middle East, Oman's oil field development is more difficult, so the Omani government has also promulgated more favorable policies and vigorously develop EOR technology.
The Alam-West field in southern Oman is home to the first solar EOR project in the Middle East. In addition, with the growing domestic demand for natural gas, Oman may gradually transform into a net natural gas importer in the future.
