Type One Energy has completed the initial design review for its Infinity Two fusion power plant in Tennessee, USA, marking a key milestone in developing a commercially viable fusion energy source. The review confirms the project’s potential to deliver sustainable electricity using stellarator technology in collaboration with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).
The design review, grounded in a peer-reviewed physics framework for fusion power, was overseen by Type One Energy’s chief technology officer, Dr. Thomas Sunn Pedersen. The review board included independent experts Dr. George H. Neilson from Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory and Dr. Paolo Ferroni from Westinghouse Electric Company. Their evaluations affirmed the engineering integrity and the feasibility of Infinity Two generating net electricity from fusion.
Dr. Neilson commented: “It is the first serious fusion power plant design that I’ve seen.” He commended Type One Energy’s foundational work, highlighting its potential for further advancement.
The Infinity Two plant is designed to produce 350 megawatts of electrical power for the grid. It utilizes stellarator fusion technology, proven effective for stable, large-scale operations through the W7-X machine. The plant’s architecture supports a two-year operating cycle with 30-day maintenance periods, relying on existing materials and technologies to ensure practical implementation.
Type One Energy has partnered with AtkinsRéalis and other firms, leveraging extensive expertise from the power generation industry to refine the plant’s design. This collaboration has strengthened the project’s technical foundation and operational planning.
The progress on Infinity Two, combined with the TVA partnership, has attracted attention from major energy utilities and industrial companies interested in supporting the deployment of this first-generation fusion power technology. The project aligns with Type One Energy’s mission to provide sustainable and affordable fusion energy globally, contributing to cleaner energy solutions.
The successful design review positions Type One Energy as a leader in advancing fusion power, with the Infinity Two plant representing a significant step toward integrating fusion energy into the electricity grid.
